Fall Kayaking at Thatcher Glen Pond

Each fall, TCS students paddle out onto the waters of Thatcher Glen Pond for one of our favorite school traditions: Fall Kayaking. Every class takes part, with older students paired with their younger buddies. This year, we kicked off the season with our K/1 and 7th graders, who took to the water together to share in teamwork, discovery, and a love of nature. Thanks to our TCS staff trained with the Greater Maywood Paddling Program, our parent volunteers, and the return of our adventure guide, Mr. Will Hudson, everyone was ready for the challenge.

The kayaking days that followed brought classic fall weather: chilly air, misty rain, and plenty of mud - but that only added to the fun. As one 5th grade parent put it, “A little mud is good for the soul!” Out on the water, students paddled together, discovered treasures in nature, and cheered on their buddies during friendly races.

Each year, kayaking reminds us how much we can learn when we step outdoors together. Older students practice leadership and patience, while younger students discover courage and confidence. Everyone learns what it means to belong to a team, and to find joy in a little adventure.
