While publishing parties have long been a part of our school's culture, our Middle Level has added its own layer by hosting a fall celebration dedicated to sharing student writing: Authors Night. Throughout the fall, each grade immerses itself in a specific genre. This year, sixth graders explored poetry, seventh graders studied short stories, and eighth graders crafted personal narratives as part of a deep dive into memoirs. These genre studies include reading mentor texts, engaging in whole-class lessons, and applying new skills to create multiple written pieces.
From there, students select one piece, refine it through multiple drafts, and prepare it for publication. Authors Night gives them the opportunity to share their polished work with peers and families. Unlike traditional writing assignments that may be seen only by a teacher, this event empowers students to use their voices with purpose. It reinforces that their ideas and stories matter, and that their words have power.
Following the presentations, the community comes together for a reception. This gives us the opportunity to celebrate the growth of our young authors, and connect and reflect together.
