Releasing Trout from our Fish Hatchery

For the last several years, our science teacher, Mr. Will Hudson, has worked with our middle school students in creating and maintaining our own TCS trout hatchery. In September, we purchase the trout eggs, and throughout the year, the students maintain the aquarium, while they learn about biology, chemistry, and environmental studies through raising the trout hatchlings. Meanwhile, the younger grades learn, too, as they enjoy visiting the fish and watching them hatch and grow.


This spring, we planned a schoolwide trout release trip to the shores of Lake Michigan so that all students could celebrate and participate in releasing the young trout into the water to help restock the lake. As the fish swam away, you could hear kids cheering and shouting: "Go for the rocks!" They've learned that by hiding under rocks, the young trout can stay safe from predators.


The day was a "feel great" experience, showing how we can nurture life and give back to nature while we learn! Here are some photos from the event:
